Dr Mónica  Araya, Senior Associate

Mónica Araya was born in Costa Rica, and has worked in sustainbility for over 20 years, focusing on consumer and citizen engagement in renewable energy and electric mobility. She founded the organisation Costa Rica Limpia to bring people closer to clean technologies that improve their everyday life and her group pioneered Movilidad Eléctrica – the first electric mobility platform in Latin America devoted to the education of consumers about electric vehicles. She co-founded the Electric Mobility Association in Costa Rica and is the Vice President of the Board.


Mónica's blog, “Essentially Electric” is hosted at the business newspaper La República. She writes frequently for international and local media and has given talks in Latin America, Europe and Asia. Her TED talk fossil-free Costa Rica that has one million views and was translated into 30 languages.  In 2017 she was mentor to the Next Visionaries, a TED & BMW initiative about the future of mobility.  In December 2016, she joined the world´s largest all-female expedition to Antarctica and was the first Latin American member of this global “women in STEM” leadership network.  Monica has written 70 publications and engages actively in public speaking. A frequent media commentator on Latin America energy and climate politics, her insights have been mentioned in local, regional and international media including TIME magazine, the Financial Times, National Geographic, El País, Repubblica, and The Guardian.
