Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Thomas Verhagen is a sustainability professional and entrepreneur with twenty years of experience building institutions, coalitions, and ventures at the intersection of finance, sustainability, and systems change. He is co-founder of Vulcan, a specialist practice working on transition finance and sustainability performance in the transition and critical metals & minerals mining sector. Previously, he co-founded Redefine Finance, a professional education company serving major global banks and development finance institutions. From 2015 to 2020, Thomas worked at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, where he led the Banking Environment Initiative — a coalition of global banks — as well as built CISL's digital financial innovation for sustainability programme.

Earlier in his career, Thomas spent a decade at ABN AMRO in corporate lending and leading an innovation centre, as well as an entrepreneur-in-residence a major startup accelerator. His work spans sustainable finance, supply chain decarbonisation, landscape-based finance, institutional capacity building, and startup venture building. He is known for translating complex challenges into actionable frameworks and convening diverse stakeholders around shared goals. Thomas holds an MSc in International Business (Finance) from Tilburg University and is a co-author of the CFA Institute ESG Investing Certificate Handbook.
