This session will explore how nature and climate targets can be aligned through government and business collaboration and action.
There is a closely intertwined relationship between climate change and nature loss. Climate change is increasingly contributing to nature loss, alongside land use change, which remains the primary driver. Conversely, nature loss is also a significant driver of climate change. Maintaining intact ecosystems is essential for their resilience in the face of climate variability.
At a point when countries have just submitted updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) through the Convention on Biological Diversity at COP16, they are also having to come forward and submit enhanced 2035 emissions reduction targets by early 2025 as part of the Paris Agreement process to ratchet ambition every five years through the setting of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
This event will explore how we can close the still existing nature-climate chasm by enhancing the upcoming NDCs by including stronger, integrated biodiversity and mitigation actions. It will build on the outcomes of COP16 and take into account ongoing discussions at COP29, providing a space for policymakers and business leaders to discuss strategies for aligning these two critical frameworks both politically and within business at a strategic level to deliver real impact.
