Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

26 May 2022 - Global pension, insurer, asset and wealth managers network the Investment Leaders Group (ILG) has announced Rick Lacaille, Executive Vice President and Global Head of ESG for State Street as its new chair.

Rick’s deep knowledge and perspective will support the ILG to broaden its focus beyond the measurement of sustainable investment impacts, and drive change in the real economy to support the transition to a low carbon, nature positive and societally resilient world.

The Investment Leaders Group is convened by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and collaborates to deliver real world research insights that investors need and can use to unlock sustainable investment challenges.

Rick Lacaille said: “It is an honour to serve as Chair of CISL’s Investment Leaders Group. We believe integrating environmental, social, and governance considerations may promote positive long-term outcomes for our clients, and I am pleased to join my fellow ILG members to advance a more sustainable future.”

Rick’s career spans 12 years as CIO of State Street Global Advisors, the world’s fourth largest asset manager, and through his current role he offers valuable insights on mobilising capital to scale sustainable investment outcomes. His detailed engagement with the market and groups including the Sustainable Markets Initiative brings opportunities for powerful collaborations and will prove useful for the ILG’s next three-year focus on fostering consensus on sustainable investment challenges and opportunities.

Lucy Auden, Senior Programme Manager, Investment Leaders Group said “Rick’s extensive experience of robust investment stewardship is brilliantly aligned to the ILG’s vision to deliver economic, social and environmentally sustainable investments alongside robust, long-term returns. We are delighted to have him as the new Chair of the Group as we move sustainable investment into the mainstream.”

Outgoing Chair, John Belgrove, previously Senior Partner and Director of Forward Thinking, Aon has overseen a number of significant achievements during his three-year chairmanship including:

  • Development of work on nature-related financial risks, culminating in CISL being named an official knowledge partner of the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD);

  • Co-creating a series of use cases that demonstrate how asset managers can start assessing nature-related financial risks in their portfolios.

The ILG has also built on previous work on the climate performance of investment funds and broadened its focus to social impacts, supporting investors to promote and measure decent work to facilitate a just transition. Moving into its fourth three-year phase since its founding, the ILG will turn its attention to how investment in nature and more equal societies at scale can enhance asset resilience and help to secure a sustainable future for all.
