The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership at the University of Cambridge is seeking applicants for a research associate/research assistant contracted post in “Sustainable Office Refurbishment and Retrofit”. The post is available immediately.

The post holder will develop case study research of a world-leading sustainable office refurbishment project. The case study research will document and examine the realisation of the refurbishment project and assess the relative importance of a range of technological, social and socio-technical factors to the achievement of the refurbishment’s sustainability objectives. The research will draw on qualitative methods, although quantitative approaches and mixed methods will also be considered and may form the basis for subsequent development of the research programme.

The refurbished 1930’s building will house the Institute’s Cambridge-based staff and will provide a hub for local and partner organisations and visiting researchers and associates. It is anticipated that the refurbishment project will meet highly ambitious targets for whole life carbon, occupant health and wellbeing, use of bio-materials and the application of circular design principles. The completed building is expected to attract international attention as an exemplar sustainable refurbishment and to achieve multiple sustainability accreditations (including BREEAM, WELLS and EnerPHit).

The successful applicant will have a working knowledge of sustainable design and construction and professional or research experience in the fields of architecture, engineering, construction or operations. Knowledge of office design, sustainability assessment and trends in the design and construction of commercial buildings will be beneficial. The successful candidate will be capable of conducting independent research and will have strong skills and competencies relative to collaboration and communication.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The funds for this 50% FTE (18.5 hours per week) contracted post are available for 6 months in the first instance. It may be possible to extend the agreement if additional funds can be secured.
