Context

In the wake of the Draghi and Letta reports, the EU’s Strategic Agenda, and Commission President Von der Leyen’s prioritisation of competitiveness at the core of her second term political agenda – with a Clean Industrial Deal set to build on the European Green Deal and its European semester strategy for competitive sustainability from her first term – the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is launching the updated 2024 edition of the Competitive Sustainability Index (CSI), with support from Breakthrough Energy and European Climate Foundation. This new edition will assess the EU’s competitive performance in the transition to a clean, just and competitively sustainable economy.

Endorsed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre as a best-in-class index when first published in 2022, the second edition continues to build on latest policy and expert thinking on economic growth, innovation and sustainable development to refine competitiveness for the EU. In contrast to conventional approaches rooted in ‘sustainable competitiveness’, the CSI provides a more forward-looking, integrated and nuanced perspective that inspires new policy thinking in aligning the various economic, social, governance and environmental dimensions. This will enable EU countries, value chains, and companies as they work to attract investors amid an urgent global shift toward truly sustainable development.

Extended and updated to offer new insights into the EU’s competitive performance against major global partners and rivals – including the US and China, whose economic and industrial strategies present clear and urgent challenges – the second edition of the CSI offers a comprehensive view of the EU’s recent performance, emerging challenges, and strategic opportunities. It highlights key areas for improvement, along with aligned strategy, process and policy recommendations to help strengthen the EU’s competitive edge in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Purpose of the webinar

In this webinar, CISL will introduce the second edition of the Competitive Sustainability Index and the accompanying report, offering critical insights into the EU's current competitive position within the international context. The session will highlight the CSI's relevance for the European Parliament, EU policymakers, and stakeholders engaged in competitiveness, industrial strategy, and sustainable development.
