Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

25 March 2024 - In this blog, Khanyi Mlambo, CISL Senior Associate, discusses the need for a comprehensive leadership approach to sustainability challenges in South Africa and beyond.

In recent years, we have witnessed increasing inequality, the destruction of livelihoods, infrastructure, and communities due to impacts of global warming, across the African continent, including in South Africa which has seen a rise in temperatures above the global average and an associated increase in heat related health crises. We can no longer turn a blind eye to the fact that something needs to change. This change can only happen when we understand that it starts with us. These are times when we are challenged to reflect on our beliefs in sustainability to determine our role on a broader scale.

While great strides are being made to overcome South Africa’s sustainability challenges, there is still significant work to be done, particularly by corporate leaders who have the greatest opportunities to shift the dial.

This is where the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) comes in, offering the Sustainability Practitioner Programme (SPP). SPP provides global and Africa-relevant insights on sustainability and the required leadership, equipping middle and senior leaders with tools and skills to respond to sustainability risks while unlocking development opportunities for business and society. The programme is specifically designed to cater to sustainability practitioners in South Africa, the continent, and emerging countries across the globe.

As a faculty member at the previous SPP with significant experience leading sustainability initiatives within corporate South Africa, I believe true leadership in this field requires more than just implementing green practices and complying with regulations. It requires a comprehensive approach that considers the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors. From my experience, the path towards a sustainable future cannot be travelled alone, as sustainability concerns are often much larger than any one individual or organisation.

Sustainability relies on the leadership of individuals and the promotion of collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders such as businesses, governments, civil society and academia. This is because the societal and environmental challenges we face are complex and require a collective effort to address them. The SPP fosters diverse perspectives and expertise in an interactive, participatory and thought-provoking manner. It encourages participants to take individual and collective action to address sustainability issues. When delegates roll up their sleeves to effect change, they build the courage necessary to make effective contributions to their organisation’s directions and sustainability commitments.

At SPP, we have commonly seen delegates feel inadequately prepared to engage with the sustainability subject. The SPP faculty then plays a role to demystify and break down the sustainability concepts to provide clarity and help build the delegate's confidence in finding their space in this field. The design of SPP is informed by the U-theory (developed by the Presencing Institute)  and follows a pedagogical process which helps the participants to think deeply and explore their own assumptions, approaches and leadership. It is about bringing things back to the essence of self-leadership and accountability, where delegates must see what is possible and understand their role in it. Our facilitation approach encourages delegates to unpack intricate ideas into manageable, practical and actionable goals within their sphere of influence to effect change back in their organisations

As one of the facilitators of the SPP, the programme plays a pivotal role in helping delegates build the courage to lead transformative change confidently. As tough as the journey is, it becomes lighter by having networks and access to professionals from diverse sectors. The delegates, therefore, leave the programme armed not only with insights but also with partners whose support becomes invaluable, as the journey can be lonely.

It is an honour to steer the delegates through a programme that enables their transformation and growth in understanding sustainability within a short space of time.  The evolution of delegates from being overwhelmed when realising the potential risks if nothing is done, to gaining hope in knowing that they can do something about it, no matter how small, is something to behold. SPP is one of the ways to empower and build a new generation of bold and visionary leaders who can lead from the core essence of who they are and what they stand for in sustainability development. This challenges all of us to understand the leadership required today, to show up differently for meaningful and sustained change.
