17 May 2016 – The Prince of Wales, Patron of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, today attended a reception and plenary meeting for a global network of investment managers and asset owners known as the Investment Leaders Group.

Read the speech by HRH The Prince of Wales for the CISL Investment Leaders Group Forum at The Royal Society.

The Investment Leaders Group (ILG) is a global network of 10 leading investment firms, with approximately US $4 trillion under management, convened by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). ILG members are: Allianz Global Investors, First State Investments, Loomis, Sayles & Company, Natixis Asset Management, Nordea Life & Pensions, Old Mutual Group, PensionDanmark, Standard Life Investments, TIAA Asset Management and Zurich Insurance Group.

The ILG’s mission is to shift the investment chain towards responsible and long-term value creation, so that economic, social and environmental sustainability are delivered as an outcome of the investment management process as investors go about generating robust, long-term returns.

Bringing together senior executives from across the investment industry, the purpose of the event was to launch and discuss the findings of three new reports produced by the ILG. These included:

In search of impact: Measuring the full value of capital: This report includes a framework to help investors calculate and communicate the social and environmental impacts of their portfolios

Taking the long view: A toolkit for tong-term, sustainable investment mandates: This report identifies the characteristics of mandates that encourage long-term, sustainable investment management.

Feeling the heat: An investor's guide to measuring business risk from carbon and energy regulation: This report develops the methodology for a financial model that assesses the impact of future carbon-related regulation on the most sensitive industries and geographies.

Keynote speakers included Mr Corso Bavagnoli who has been Head of the Financial Affairs Division at the Directorate General of the Treasury and Ms Corien Wortmann-Kool, Chairman of the Board, Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP. The event was attended by global leaders from across the insurance, pension fund and asset management industries.

About the reports

In search of impact: Measuring the full value of capital

As fiduciaries, investors gain by helping beneficiaries make informed choices about the management of their savings and investments. While the financial performance of funds is readily accessible, their social and environmental impact remains largely opaque, not only to the public but to the industry too. Drawing on a CISL model of economic transition which takes the SDGs as its starting point, this framework helps investors to calculate and communicate the social and environmental impacts of their portfolios.

Taking the long view: A toolkit for long-term, sustainable investment mandates

Mandates are the vehicle through which client interest is communicated and secured along the investment chain, and are thus one of the most strategically important levers a responsible investor can pull. The report identifies the characteristics of such agreements that encourage long-term, sustainable investment management to take place. By encoding such characteristics into mandates, investors strengthen their ability to make capital work for the benefit of society.

Feeling the heat: An investors’ guide to measuring business risk from carbon and energy regulation

This report develops the methodology for a financial model that assesses the impact of future carbon-related regulation on the most sensitive industries and geographies. The first phase of the project covers three high-risk sectors (electric utilities, oil refining and natural gas) in five key geographies (UK, Spain, Germany, Canada’s Alberta province and the US State of California). With the help of an analytical tool, investors can begin anticipating the financial impact of future climate-related policy within their models and investment decisions.
