What is COP28?
In November 2023, the UAE will be hosting the 28th annual session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, or “COP28”, in Dubai, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.
At the summit, delegates including heads of state, climate experts and negotiators will come together to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change – key negotiations will focus on building momentum on the progress made at COP27.
As well as the negotiations, there will also be space for countries, international organisations and other delegates to showcase climate action, highlight diverse climate change issues and share knowledge.
Why is COP28 important?
COP28 marks the conclusion of the first global stocktake (GST), the main mechanism through which progress under the Paris Agreement is assessed. The world is not on track to meeting the agreement’s goals, but it is hoped that governments at COP28 will come up with a roadmap to accelerate climate action.
Negotiators at COP28 are also tasked with kickstarting the loss and damage fund (established at COP27) and agreeing on a framework for the Paris Agreement’s global goal on adaptation (GGA). Other areas of importance include energy transition, food systems transformation and climate
