What is COP27 and why is it important?
In November 2022, the Egypt will be hosting the 27th annual session of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention, or “COP27”, in Sharm El-Sheikh, with a view to building on previous successes and paving the way for future ambition.
At the summit, delegates including heads of state, climate experts and negotiators will come together to agree coordinated action to tackle climate change – key negotiations will focus on building momentum on the progress made at COP26.
As well as the negotiations, there will also be space for countries, international organisations and other delegates to showcase climate action, highlight diverse climate change issues and share knowledge.
The key priorities of COP27 are climate mitigation, adaption and finance.

Members of CISL’s staff and Faculty have been fortunate to attend the Conference of the Parties to the Convention over the past few years. By attending the summits we leverage our expertise and experience in convening multiple stakeholders from across business, policy and finance in order to drive climate ambition and action.
Climate change affects everyone, yet very few individuals are granted access to the summits. We recognise the importance of including voices from across our network and broader society in climate discourse. This year we’ll be collaborating with our partners across the sustainability space to share insights and takeaways from the summit.
Our Every Voice Counts will share messages from members of our community for action – who demonstrate why climate action is an urgent priority in all global contexts.

CISL’s five asks for COP27
- Ambition and implementation: Analysis of country net zero targets shows that action is slowing – there is both an ambition and an implementation gap. We need to close both gaps through setting stronger targets and establishing the right policies and actions to reach these targets and change course in this critical decade.
- Accelerating clean energy uptake: Current energy and cost of living crises have pushed climate change down the domestic political agendas worldwide. COP27 provides an opportunity for multilateral collaboration between countries to phase out fossil fuels, accelerate the shift to renewables and implement energy efficiency measures to support demand reduction.
- Creating climate resilience through a just transition: We need to adapt as a global community to a changing climate. This will require the international community coming together at COP and delivering on a global goal to double international finance for adaptation by 2025. Businesses and financial institutions have a critical role to play by making climate resilience a strategic priority.
- Financing the climate transition at scale and pace: Financial institutions underpin present and future global systems and need to take an active and assertive role in delivering a climate transition. This includes forging partnerships between government, central banks and private institutions to supply the trillions of dollars needed to accelerate the global transition to a Net Zero economy.
- A new climate-nature compact: We must achieve net zero while also protecting and restoring nature. It is critical that the climate and nature agendas converge and align. COP27 needs to identify actions on climate mitigation and adaptation that are in line with responding to the dual climate and nature crisis, setting the scene for COP15 – the largest biodiversity meeting in a generation. Connected momentum from policy, finance and business are required across both events.
