Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

April 2020 – Gillian Secrett has joined the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) Education team to head a new Leadership Programmes portfolio, which puts sustainability at its core.

Gillian SecrettLeadership development is an important part of CISL’s work to support major organisations to build the leadership capacity they need to respond to strategic sustainability challenges; to innovate and collaborate in creating value that meets society’s needs; and to be influential in shaping the future we want.

This is particularly relevant as leaders work to address the ongoing impact of Covid-19 and the implications for the future of business, for the way we work, and for individual and organisational leadership.

On joining, Gillian said:

“I’m excited to join CISL at a time of such extraordinary change and when big questions are being asked of leaders in business and government.

My focus will be on how leaders can ‘build back better” to create value, and build resilience for their stakeholders by better understanding social and environmental risks and impacts, and embracing new opportunities to contribute to the future we want for society, the environment and the economy.”

CISL’s Leadership Programmes portfolio supports leading businesses to integrate sustainability into the way that leaders are developed right across organisations, to build leadership capability and drive value for shareholders and stakeholders in this context.

Gillian will play a major role in the further development of CISL’s thinking and curriculum in relation to high impact leadership; helping leaders to develop resilience and agility to embrace sustainability and lead through uncertainty and constant change.

CISL presently supports the development of leaders through executive, graduate and online programmes, which include major bespoke programmes for clients in the banking, utilities, mining, engineering and pharmaceutical sectors and two online programmes: High Impact Leadership, and Communication for Influence and Impact.

As part of CISL Executive Education Gillian will work closely with the Strategy Programmes team, and the Centre for Business Transformation.

Gillian has joined us from her role as CEO of the Møller Institute in Cambridge, having been its guiding force for over two decades to create the Institute as it is today. There she established a purpose led, values-based culture and leadership approach which put clients at the heart of the Institute's work and success. CISL regularly works with the Møller Institute so this role will enable Gillian to continue her connection and collaboration.

Gillian’s experience includes her own experience and study of leadership, sustainability, and work with global organisations in the design and delivery of practical leadership development. She is a qualified business coach, Chartered Director and Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

Gillian is an alumnus of CISL having graduated with cohort 7 on the Master of Studies degree in sustainability leadership.
