Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Clare Shine

22 August 2023 - Clare Shine has stepped down as CEO of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). The University Management Board has invited her to become a Fellow of the Institute and Clare will remain actively involved with CISL’s critical work and its unique global community of leaders and innovators.

Clare joined CISL in 2021 when the University was emerging from the Covid pandemic. Under her leadership, CISL has focused on defining its future purpose, objectives and strategy for impact. Clare played a key role in completion of CISL’s award-winning sustainable headquarters, the Entopia Building, and has championed steps to make this iconic facility an inclusive and inspirational workspace for staff, researchers, entrepreneurs and partners.

Internationally, she laid foundations to expand CISL’s reach and influence, including by helping launch the Cambridge-Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme for Africa, and expanding the reach of CISL's flagship executive education programme, The Prince of Wales's Business & Sustainability Programme, to Singapore.

On the announcement, Clare said: “It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve as Director and CEO of CISL. I am proud of how we have worked together to shape "oneCISL" culture and strategy, to bring the Entopia Building to life and to energise our exceptional global community.

"CISL has an extraordinary past and an exciting future. Its expertise, partnerships and innovation have never mattered more. I look forward to supporting our Institute, and the wider University, as a CISL Fellow and to contributing actively to our network’s impact across continents, generations and sectors."

Clare is an independent non-executive Board Member of the Crown Estate, and her future work will involve international and non-executive roles with organisations committed to accelerate leadership and action for people, nature and climate.
