29 October 2024 - At a crucial moment during the COP16 UN Biodiversity Summit negotiations, over 70 global leaders have come together to back Presidents Gustavo Petro and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recognizing their leadership in taking integrated action on climate, nature and food systems.
The letter, convened by Groundswell, recognises the historic opportunity leaders have to change course. As COP Presidents, Colombia and Brazil can lead all actors in accelerating global progress, from UN CBD COP16 to UNFCCC COP30.To deliver a triple win for people, nature and food security, the signatories, including CISL CEO Lindsay Hooper, point to three priority areas for the Presidents to focus on:
- Strengthen national climate and biodiversity plans.
- Scale up investment for nature and food systems transformation.
- Support the full and effective participation of farmers, Indigenous Peoples and local communities across policy development, decision making and monitoring.
This letter brings together a diverse group of voices - representing business, finance, science, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities.Signatories signal their support to world leaders to urgently accelerate progress towards these three priority outcomes and “make ‘peace with nature’ the principle that gives shape to these national climate plans.”
