Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Mary-Jane Morifi is currently the Chief Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Officer at Tiger Brands responsible for Corporate Communications and Media Relations, Stakeholder and Government Relations, Sustainable Socio-Economic Development and Sustainability, Enterprise and Supplier Development and the Tiger Brands Foundation.    

Biography

She joined Tiger Brands from The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust where she was the Global Capital Campaign Lead and raised the R1b required to build, equip, and train the medical personnel for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.  The state of the art hospital was launched in December 2016 as a legacy for Madiba.  

Prior to joining the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust she was a member of the Executive Committee of Anglo American Platinum where she lead the Corporate Affairs Function.  While at Anglo American Platinum she launched the mine host community and labour sending areas empowerment initiative under Project Alchemy.  This initiative created an umbrella Trust, the Lefa La Rona Trust and 5 mine host community Trusts and a Not-for-Profit company as custodians of the communities’ R3.5b economic interest in Anglo American Platinum.   

She has worked in the field of social development for more than 30 years. She currently serves on the boards of Dipuno Fund (Tiger Brands’ R100m Enterprise and Supplier Development fund which she set up in 2018), The Tiger Brands Foundation, The Open Society Foundation for South Africa (A social justice foundation set up by George Soros), The Black Sash Trust, The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and Leratong Hospice (a community palliative care facility in Atteridgeville, the township where she grew up).  

She has held senior leadership positions in the mining, oil and gas, and food companies where she initiated some of the most innovative social development and empowerment projects in the country. 

She is a Senior Associate for the Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership.  

In 2021 she was named one of Africa’s 100 most influential women.
