Jon  Samuel, Senior Associate

Jon Samuel is Group Head of Social Performance and Engagement at Anglo American, based in London. He leads a team with responsibility for the development and delivery of policies, strategies, community development programmes and professional development relating to the company’s host communities, and for liaison with key external partners engaging on the mining and sustainability agenda.


The team’s work has included leading development and implementation of: the Anglo American Social Way, the company’s highly regarded management standards for social performance; the mining industry’s first standardised stakeholder complaints and grievance procedure; the Socio-Economic Assessment Toolbox (SEAT), Anglo American’s award-winning guidance manual for community relations practitioners; and the company’s strategy for socio-economic development.  Jon was also a part of the core team that developed Anglo American’s new Sustainable Mining Plan, which includes ambitious targets in a range of sustainability-related areas. 

Jon is a Senior Associate of the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, a trustee of the Anglo American Foundation and a Director of the Development Partner Institute, International Women in Mining and the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance. 

Jon is an economist by training and studied at University College London and the University of Cambridge.  He lives in London with his wife and two young daughters.
