Biography

Over her 26-year career Jo has worked in almost every area of landscape and urban design – mainly in the UK, but also on occasional overseas projects (mainly to do with power). She currently works for an engineering consultancy on large-scale infrastructure and engineering projects, most recently on new railways - HS2, Crossrail, the East London Line and the Docklands Light Railway. Jo’s special area of interest is the integration of major infrastructure schemes into the wider environment and finding ways in which they can make positive improvements to that environment – through the creation of new landforms, open spaces and wildlife habitats, by improving the quality of the public realm and by enhancing connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists in rural and urban areas. She is also interested in how new buildings and infrastructure can be used to improve the quality of life for urban dwellers – using living plants to cool the external environment, to slow and capture storm water run-off and to provide food, flowers and new habitats.  Jo believes that the natural world must be allowed a place in the city – not just to mitigate the impacts of new development, but also to give people a link with living things and the delight that can be found in nature. Jo is on the Design and Conservation Panel for Cambridge City Council which advises the council on design matters and on an advisory committee for the Wicken Fen Nature Reserve.
