"We can learn a lot from the UK experience in terms of resilient spirit, and it will be beneficial to our work."

Deputy Mayor, July 2015

Cambridge insight, policy and industry impact

Over 800 years, the University’s collegiate structure, human scale and cross-disciplinary approach has enabled great minds to become more than the sum of their parts. It has led to vital breakthroughs and can lead to many more. The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership is well-placed to harness this intellectual contribution, converting it into practical, relevant insights for government and industry leaders.

We combine a deep understanding of macro-level trends and challenges with a focus on practical implementation in national, regional and organisational strategies and policies.

Through Cambridge’s thought leadership and our network of senior practitioners from government and industry, we have expert insight into leadership for sustainability, green finance, natural resource security, business innovation for sustainability, and achieving a just transition to a low carbon economy.

Our track record

For over 25 years we have been working to build leadership capacity to tackle critical global challenges, through our business actionexecutive education and Master's-level programmes. Working with multinational businesses, multilateral agencies and national governments, we deliver projects on the ground in Europe, Africa, North and South America, Asia and Australia. From global banks and consumer brands to international agencies and national governments, we work with leaders at the highest level, employing a variety of approaches to developing leadership capacity for sustainability.

Studying in Cambridge is a unique experience

Established in the 12th century, the University of Cambridge has an 800-year history of academic excellence. With over 90 Nobel prize-winners among our alumni, and some of the most distinguished research laboratories and libraries in the world, we are able to offer a truly distinctive environment for learning. Our teaching takes place in University facilities, including in some of the historic colleges, which have inspired generations of students.

World-class academics and practitioners

Because Cambridge is home to outstanding academics in a broad range of disciplines, we are able to bring in world-class faculty to teach our programmes, and can make sure that our work is informed by the latest research. For example, in our work on cities, we are able to draw on work from a series of other groups, including the Centre for Rising Powers, the Centre for Urban Conflicts Research, the Energy Efficient Cities Initiative, and the Martin Centre for Architectural and Urban Studies. For business and for the financial sector programmes, we are able to draw upon colleagues from the Cambridge Judge Business School, the Faculty of Economics and the Institute for Manufacturing. Our work also benefits from our international network of Fellows and Senior Associates, many of whom have direct experience of implementing change.

Hub of innovation and technology

As well as having a rich history, Cambridge is also a vital hub of innovation. The University is at the heart of the UK's largest and most significant cluster of technology companies – with over 1,000 companies involved. Innovations driven from Cambridge are shaping the world, and local industries are now tackling some of the most compelling issues of our day: the development of new biomedical technologies; software and hardware that enables IT across a huge range of industries; and new technologies for sustainability, including new materials, energy sources and ways of managing businesses.

"The Cambridge Phenomenon is a good example of the combination of technology and commerce."

Deputy Director, July 2015

A gateway to London and to the University’s international network

The University’s close proximity to London means that our students can experience learning first-hand with site visits to some of London's most important organisations, including site visits to best practice government and private sector projects. We enable networking opportunities with the business community in London, including with financial institutions in the City of London. Beyond this, our programmes benefit from access to the wider University’s international network, through insight into global trends and relevant case studies.

Extracurricular activities

During our programmes we can also provide extracurricular activities on non-study days, which will help participants engage with British history and culture, and give a deeper understanding of the UK. Our students have visited a wide range of cultural sites, have learned about British food and have also enjoyed punting on the River Cam.
