Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Jon Alexander

9 May 2024 - The author spoke at CISL today on the role of Citizens in the climate emergency.

Jon Alexander today delivered a special lunchtime seminar to University of Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership staff and local Network members.

The Co-Founder of the New Citizenship Project (NCP) spoke on the shift needed from consumer mindsets to those of citizen participation. This is a continuation of the great conversations that arose at CISL’s inaugural Global Leadership Summit in February of this year. And its supporting report ‘Global Leadership in an Age of Turbulence’

Jon said: “I truly believe that if we can shift the mindset of leaders from across sectors - so they think of people as citizens with a deep need to participate and contribute, not just consumers motivated by narrow self interest - the results could be transformative. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to share my work with the CISL community, a group that is uniquely placed to effect that shift. I hope this is just the beginning!”

Jon is the author of ‘CITIZENS: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us’ and his NCP work sets out to shift the dominant story of the individual from ‘consumer’ to a more active ‘citizen’.

He was joined by CEO Lindsay Hooper at CISL’s headquarters, Entopia Building, in Cambridge, and discussed examples of citizen assemblies; how to build on strong positions, the importance of leadership examining new routes to impact.
