31 March 2020 – We are very sad to report the passing of José Lopez, CISL Fellow and Former COO and Member of the Executive Board of Nestlé SA, following a brave battle against cancer.
José was a friend, Fellow and major contributor to CISL’s work and programmes for many years. José combined his extensive business experience with passion and insight into sustainability that was ahead of his time in so many ways. He was early to innovate in business thinking and practice, and he challenged us all to develop the ideas, and to draw on science and a rigorous evidence base to build and implement the approaches that are needed for the private sector to transform. As the Chair of CISL’s Natural Capital Impact Group, José inspired the group his a bold vision for linking the value of nature with commercial benefits for companies - recognising that to protect and restore the natural world at scale, business must value and manage the true costs of its activities on the nature.
His energy, drive, clarity and friendship will be sorely missed, and we extend our thoughts and condolences to his family.
