PCSB Online Curriculum

Through an accessible and highly interactive online learning experience, participants explore the forces reshaping business and society, examine practical routes to action, and engage with peers from diverse sectors and geographies. Combining academic rigour, applied learning and real-world examples, the programme equips participants to make better decisions, navigate complexity and contribute to resilient, future-fit organisations and economies.

Programme Structure

The programme comprises:  

• 9 months of active study, typically requiring 8 hours/week on average.  
• Four interdisciplinary modules on cross-cutting sustainability themes and on academic writing and research skills, delivered via:    
• 20 live virtual teaching sessions and masterclasses, each lasting 90 minutes and scheduled around midday (UK time), delivered synchronously by leading experts, academics and business practitioners. These interactive sessions combine academic insights, case studies and real-world examples, providing students with opportunities to engage directly with business leaders and learn from practical experiences across sectors.  
• Self-directed online learning, including approximately 90 minutes of preparation before each live virtual session, supported by peer-to-peer discussions, guided activities and curated resources available through the Virtual Learning Environment.   
• Three assessed assignments: a collaborative group research project, and two individual assignments undertaken sequentially, supported by supervision. Further details about assignments can be found on the Assignment page. 

Throughout the programme, students are encouraged and supported to collaborate and network with their peers as well as with expert contributors, through online discussion forums, interactive workshops, supervision sessions, and self-organised group project meetings. They also have access to a wide range of academic and research resources from the University of Cambridge. 

Curriculum overview

Below is an outline of the current modules and indicative themes. In view of the rapidly evolving nature of the field, please note that the content is subject to change.  

Block 1: Businesses Responses to Disruption and Transition  

Block 1 explores how businesses are responding to a world shaped by disruption, uncertainty and transition. Students examine the interconnected challenges and opportunities arising from sustainability pressures, geopolitical developments, technology and evolving societal expectations. Through an introduction to sustainability concepts, systems thinking, policy and governance, as well as emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, this part builds the knowledge and perspectives needed to understand complex challenges, identify opportunities for innovation, and develop more resilient and future-fit business responses.  

The Block 1 is structured around 4 core themes:  

• Systems thinking and strategic response  
• Sustainability and long-term value creation  
• Technology, innovation and transformation  
• Policy, finance and enabling change  

Block 2: Adaptive Leadership for Resilient Organisations  

Block 2 focuses on translating knowledge and ambition into action. Students explore how organisations can drive sustainability transitions across teams, functions and stakeholder groups, while developing the leadership capabilities needed to navigate uncertainty. Through a combination of organisational change, stakeholder engagement, strategic decision-making and leadership development, participants strengthen their ability to influence, build alignment, and create the conditions for meaningful and lasting impact. The emphasis is on equipping students with the practical skills, strategic judgement and confidence needed to lead at both organisational and systems levels.  

The Block 2 is structured around 4 core themes:  

• Organisational Transformation and Change  
• Stakeholder Engagement and Influence  
• Leadership for Complexity and Uncertainty  

• Systems leadership and long-term value creation  

   

Recognition of prior learning with CISL  

Students who have completed one of the CISL’s 8-week online business courses prior to applying to PCSB Online will have this achievement formally recognised through the option to opt out of five live virtual sessions within the programme.  

Students who have completed one of the core Business Sustainability courses offered by CISL—Business Sustainability Management, Business and Climate Change: Towards Net Zero Emissions, Sustainable Supply Chain Management or Governance for a Sustainable Future—will be eligible to opt out of live sessions in Part 1. Those who have completed one of the sector-focused courses—Sustainable Finance Leading Capital and Investment Strategies, Sustainable Marketing: Communications and Brand Management, Sustainable Real Estate: Risk, Resilience and Value in the Built Environment,  Sustainable Food: Production and Processing—or one of the Leadership courses—Leading Sustainability: High Impact Leadership or Communicating for Influence and Impact—will have the opportunity to opt out of five live virtual sessions in Part 2. A corresponding fee reduction will also be applied.
