Matteo Mirolo is an expert in climate and energy policy, on a mission to help make aviation sustainable. At Breakthrough Energy, an organisation founded by Bill Gates to accelerate innovation in sustainable energy, he is working to scale up contrail avoidance, in an effort to significantly reduce the non-CO2 impacts of aviation. He is also Senior Policy Advisor at Arcadia eFuels, a company planning three major e-kerosene plants in Denmark, the United States and the United Kingdom. In this role, he works with governments to foster industrial strategies conducive to a significant increase in SAF availability.

Matteo has a keen interest in the nexus between climate and defence, as a reserve Captain in the French Air and Space Force, where he works on sustainable aviation. He is also a member of Air New Zealand’s sustainability advisory panel. Matteo honed his expertise at Transport & Environment, the EU’s leading clean transport NGO, where he led the aviation fuel programme and helped bring the world’s largest SAF mandate, ReFuelEU Aviation, into EU law.

He holds an undergraduate degree in Human, Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge and a graduate degree in International Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, during which time he was a visiting student at
Stanford University. Matteo is a French and Italian national, based in Brussels.
