Help Shape the Markets of the Future
Today's markets shape where capital flows, which business models thrive and whether innovation succeeds. They influence how societies grow, how industries evolve and whether solutions to major economic, social and environmental challenges can achieve scale.
Yet too often markets reward short-term outcomes over long-term resilience, prosperity and value creation. Climate instability, nature loss, resource insecurity, technological change and geopolitical uncertainty are reshaping the foundations of our economies, while many of the systems on which we depend were designed for a different era.
For more than three decades, the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has worked with business, finance, government and academia to help create the conditions for lasting change. With philanthropic support, we can accelerate that work and help shape the next generation of markets, systems and institutions.
The Opportunity
We believe markets can become powerful drivers of long-term value, resilience and better outcomes for people and nature.
Achieving this future requires transformation across the systems that underpin prosperity, including food and land, energy, the built environment, materials and manufacturing, and finance. It also requires leadership, innovation, investment and policy to move in the same direction.
Yet progress is often slowed by barriers that sit between organisations rather than within them. Incentives remain misaligned. Investment, infrastructure, innovation and policy evolve at different speeds. Many of the activities needed to support long-term change do not fit traditional commercial funding models.
At the same time, disruption is accelerating. Climate and nature risks are becoming harder to absorb. Resource security is increasingly shaping geopolitics. AI and digital technologies are transforming how economies operate. New technologies, business models and investment opportunities are emerging at pace.
The question is not whether change will happen, but how quickly and on what terms. There remains an opportunity to help shape markets that reward long-term value and resilience before change is driven primarily by shocks, shortages and disruption.
Why Philanthropy Matters
Much of the work required to transform markets sits beyond the scope of commercial funding.
It includes building evidence, supporting experimentation, developing new pathways, convening leaders, connecting innovation with finance and policy, and sustaining collaboration until viable routes to change emerge. These activities create value for entire systems and societies rather than individual organisations.
Philanthropic support allows CISL to undertake this independent, evidence-informed work. It enables us to think long term, act ahead of established demand and focus on the public-benefit conditions needed for markets to deliver resilience, prosperity and better outcomes for society.
Beyond financial support, philanthropy also brings networks, insight and influence that can help accelerate change across sectors and institutions.
Why CISL
For more than 30 years, CISL has worked at the point where ideas, evidence, capital, policy, innovation and business decisions meet.
As an impact-led institute within the University of Cambridge, we combine academic credibility and independence with practical engagement across business, finance, government and philanthropy.
More than 45,000 leaders have participated in CISL programmes. Through initiatives including the Corporate Leaders Groups, and our Centre for Sustainable Finance we have helped shape policy, finance and business responses to sustainability challenges. Through our innovation ecosystem, sustainable finance platforms, leadership programmes, we work across the boundaries where progress often becomes stuck.
Today, we are building on this legacy to help shape the markets and systems that will define the next phase of economic transition.
Two Ways to Support Change
- Support CISL's Independent Capacity for Market Transformation: Some of the most important work required to transform markets sits beyond the scope of individual programmes and projects. This includes identifying emerging opportunities, developing new thinking, building evidence, convening leaders, connecting expertise across disciplines and sustaining collaborations that create change across entire systems. Core philanthropic support enables CISL to work independently, respond to emerging challenges and opportunities, and build the long-term capabilities needed to create wider system-level impact.
- Support Transformation Across Markets, Systems and Regions: Philanthropic support can help accelerate change in the areas where CISL has the greatest opportunity to create long-term impact. This includes work across critical systems such as food and land, the built environment, energy, materials and manufacturing, alongside cross-cutting areas including sustainable finance, leadership, policy, technology and innovation. It also includes regional initiatives, such as our work in Africa and Europe, where economic resilience, competitiveness and sustainability must be advanced together.
Rather than supporting individual projects in isolation, philanthropy helps CISL build the evidence, partnerships, leadership capability and market conditions needed for change across sectors, regions and economies.
What Philanthropy Can Unlock
Philanthropic funding has often enabled CISL to explore new opportunities, build partnerships and create platforms that later attract wider support.
For example, when CISL's founder director, Dame Polly Courtice, donated her Stanford Bright Award prize to the organisation, it provided catalytic funding that helped launch what became the Cambridge Living Lab. What began with the Entopia Building has since developed into a wider platform for testing innovation, building evidence and connecting partners around practical pathways for change.
We continue to work with philanthropists, foundations and mission-aligned partners who want to help shape the markets, institutions and systems that will define the next phase of economic transition.
