Cambridge Edge AI Innovation for Sustainability Challenge 2026
Designing the next generation of intelligent, resource-conscious systems for industry: Can AI systems collaborate without sharing raw data?
The rapid expansion of AI in sensors, devices and distributed infrastructure opens new possibilities for industry, including monitoring and reducing the impacts of business operations. However, most AI systems currently rely on centralised data and resource-intensive computation with a significant environmental footprint. Resolving this tension involves moving away from centralised computing and towards collaborative edge intelligence to build smarter, more resource-efficient digital systems.
How can we design distributed AI systems – where individual nodes retain their own data and use limited computing and energy resources but exchange knowledge to generate collective intelligence – in a way that supports more sustainable outcomes?
The Cambridge Edge AI Innovation for Sustainability Challenge 2026 – hosted by MICROIP x Arculus System, in partnership with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) – invites UK university students to answer this question. Focusing on concept design rather than finished products, interested students are encouraged to design a multi-node edge AI solution in which the system generates collective intelligence that surpasses the capability of any single node, while demonstrating genuine resource-efficiency or environmental impact gains.
The challenge offers participants the chance to showcase their ideas at a Cambridge forum exploring the future of AI and sustainable systems, with a £6,000 prize for the winning submission and the possibility of collaboration with established industry leaders.

Instructions for the submission portal
Here is a short overview of how the platform works for participants, from sign-in to submission.
- Passwordless sign-in (no account or password)
A participant enters their email address and receives a one-time "magic link". Clicking the link signs them in - there is no password to create or remember. - Completing their details (first sign-in)
After signing in, the participant fills in their information: Full Name, Institution, Academic Level, and Country. They must also tick three confirmations before they can take part:- I am 18 years of age or older
- I accept the Privacy Notice
- I accept the Terms & Competition Rules
- Creating a team
The participant can create a team and give it a name (they become the team leader). - Inviting team members
The leader enters their teammates' email addresses. Each invited member receives their own magic link to sign in, and completes their own details and confirmations (step 2) on their own account. - Preparing and submitting the entry
Following the competition rules, the team uploads their deliverables:- Research document
- Presentation
- Code
- Demo video (an unlisted YouTube link - visible to anyone with the link, but not listed publicly)
- The team leader finalises the submission before the deadline.
Who is it for?
We welcome individuals, groups, and multidisciplinary teams currently enrolled at a UK university, with a lead representative who is in or able to travel to Cambridge for final judging and prize award (reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed). The challenge is especially well-suited to students working in AI and machine learning, computer science, electrical engineering, robotics and embedded systems, sustainability science, or technology entrepreneurship – as well as those working across disciplinary boundaries.
Please note: you do not need to use specific frameworks or platforms to participate, and are invited to design your solution using the tools, devices and data to which you already have access.

- Preliminary judging: 24 August 2026 to mid-September
- Semi-finalists announced: mid-September 2026
- Semi-final on-site presentation: 28 September 2026
- Finals (on-site) and prize award: 29 September 2026
