CLG Europe and The B Team convened business leaders in New York for a dialogue with EU Commissioner for Climate, Net-Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoesktra on how decarbonisation and energy independence can support a more affordable, secure, stable and competitive Europe.
A central message from the discussion was that climate policy and economic policy must go hand in hand. Against a backdrop of geopolitical instability, volatile energy markets and climate impacts, participants highlighted the importance of accelerating the transition and building on the progress already made.
Policy certainty emerged as a key condition for unlocking large-scale business investment. Businesses stressed the need for long-term trust in stable policy frameworks, including a robust EU Emissions Trading System, and looked to European institutions to provide the consistency needed to invest with confidence.
The discussion also highlighted electrification, circularity, public procurement and infrastructure as key enablers of faster delivery. Progress across these areas can help translate Europe’s climate ambitions into practical action while strengthening its economic resilience and competitiveness.
Participants emphasised the role of business leadership in demonstrating what works. By showcasing action and sharing practical experience, European companies can help build confidence and momentum for the transition across the continent.
The dialogue was moderated by María Mendiluce, with scene-setting contributions and closing remarks from Jesper Brodin, Fleming Voetmann and Mary Robinson.
CLG Europe looks forward to continuing its work with Commissioner Hoekstra and his team to support delivery of Europe’s clean transition.
