Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

Canopy's Financial Times announcement

27 February 2025 - CISL’s Canopy has once again been recognised as one of Europe’s leading startup hubs, following its selection by the Financial Times in collaboration with Statista for the 2025 rankings.

The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership’s (CISL) Canopy is a vibrant network of purpose-driven innovators and entrepreneurs dedicated to building ventures that put sustainability at the heart of their work and focus on tackling global sustainability challenges.

This prestigious recognition, which is based of votes from startup founders, highlights the innovation hub’s ongoing success in fostering innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurial excellence across Europe.

The annual report, which examines the efforts of hundreds of startup hubs, celebrates organisations that provide comprehensive support to entrepreneurs – from mentoring and training to legal advice, funding opportunities, and support.

Out of 3000 of applicants, only 150 hubs were identified as leaders in driving growth in the startup ecosystem, reaffirming Canopy’s contribution to nurturing early-stage ventures and accelerating innovation. Canopy achieved a placing of #57, and 13th in the UK overall. This is the second time Canopy has received this award, having also been a recipient in 2024.

“We are thrilled to be recognised among Europe’s leading startup hubs once again,” said James Cole, Chief Innovation Officer at CISL. “This recognition is a testament to our vibrant community of startups, academics and investors, our international accelerator programmes and the industry partnerships we continue to build. It reinforces our mission to support high-impact startups using commercial ventures to tackle major challenges – from climate change to social inequality.”

“Our members are achieving incredible results, and we are lucky to be part of this thriving community, based in Cambridge, but which reaches around the world, to bring new innovations to the planet’s toughest challenges.” said Zoe Loughlin, who leads the Canopy Innovation Community.

Recent member successes include Neutreeno securing a $5 million Seed round in October; Harish Pesala (SmartReslilience) who was nominated by the UK Space Agency as a finalist for the Orbital Investment Award; and four exceptional startups nominated for the 2025 Earthshot Prize.

The startups and entrepreneurs supported through CISL’s Canopy community are working hard to scale their sustainable innovations globally to commercially viable solutions, that can transform the way businesses operate.
