About

Launched on 1st October 2024 this is a 3-month programme, brought to you by UNICEF's office of innovation and supported and hosted by CISL's Canopy team. 

Who’s it for?

This programme is bringing together over 60 participants, including 14 climate innovators and 28+ UNICEF country office staff from 20 global south countries. 

Format

We are hosting weekly masterclass sessions build on subjects based of participant feedback and the needs of UNICEF country offices and the young innovators.

This is a startup accelerator programme in partnership with UNICEF Office of Innovation, continuing our work on the impactful Innovation30 initiative.

From October to December, we will host six engaging masterclass sessions, bringing together over 60 participants,including 14 climate innovators and 28+ UNICEF country office staff from 20 global south countries. This truly global cohort will explore broad sustainability topics, enriching the learning experience for all involved.

 

 

The masterclass sessions


The masterclass sessions will focus on specific subject areas highlighted by participants in a pre-programme survey, and designed by CISL's expert subject matter team:

  • 22nd Oct: Innovation in Renewable Energy Systems​

  • 29th Oct: Radical Innovation with emerging tech (AI)​

  • 12th Nov: Innovation Impact & Measurement

The Delivery Team


Jie Zhou

Jie Zhou is a sustainability expert with over 15 years of experience in circular economy, systems thinking, and innovation. At the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), she helped launch The Canopy, CISL’s incubator and innovation hub, and leads the Sino-UK Centre for Sustainability Innovation. Jie’s work spans accelerator programs, decarbonisation toolkits for SMEs, and partnerships with organizations like UNICEF and Imperial College. She is also a Research Advisor at Newham College, a Trustee at Dialogue Earth, and an Advisor at Undivided VC. Jie is a dedicated advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, serving as a role model for underrepresented groups.

 

Sam Laakkonen

Senior Programme Director of the Canopy & Accelerator Team at CISL, Sam started his career as a management consultant in the City of London. He was headhunted to his first startup, FirstMark Communications Europe, which raised one of the largest Series A rounds in European history, over $1 billion. He has since been an early employee at Spotify, privately invested in 25+ startups, had 3 further exits from his own companies, helped 250+ startups accelerate growth, and works as an expert for the European Commission to distribute EIC equity and grant funding. Sam has been active in the Techstars ecosystem for a number of years, having been an Entrepreneur-In-Residence for Techstars Amsterdam, and a Lead Mentor on a number of programmes including Techstars Lisbon, Techstars Korea, Techstars Boulder and Techstars Energy in Oslo.

 

Zoë Loughlin

Zoë manages the Canopy, CISL’s Cambridge workspace and global community for impact-driven startups, small businesses and entrepreneurs. Zoë has over 10 years experience working in sustainability across the public and third sector and in the innovation ecosystem. She has specialised knowledge on waste reduction, recycling and sustainable food systems, previously working at Sustain (the Alliance for Better Food and Farming), the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership, WasteWatch, Glopolis, and Green Alliance. Zoë also cofounded a social enterprise focused on food waste reduction and held voluntary positions as Hub leader at Cambridge FoodCycle and on the Board for Cambridge Sustainable Food. Zoë joined CISL in 2016 as part of the Marketing, Communications and Corporate Relations team, working across programme marketing, external communications, publications, Network development, and the Unilever Young Entrepreneur Awards, before moving to her current position in 2022. Zoë has a BA in Geography from the University of Leeds, and a certificate in Business Sustainability Management from the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.

 

James Cole

Chief Innovation Officer

James has spent over 15 years working at the intersection of business, sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship. As part of CISL’s senior leadership team he works across business policy and finance initiatives building the capacity of leaders, and leading institutions, to drive systemic change for global sustainability. In 2022 he launched The Canopy - CISL’s incubator, accelerator and workspace in central Cambridge, to activate an international community of impact-led startups, entrepreneurs, investors and innovators.
