About
The global trading system is being reshaped by tariffs, industrial subsidies, supply chain pressures, energy security and carbon pricing, putting a steady squeeze on business competitiveness and changing where companies source, manufacture and invest. But competitiveness is as much a question of policy frameworks as business capability. Countries that pair the two well will lead rather than follow. Growth, innovation and the ability to compete have therefore become central to the UK’s and Europe’s economic resilience.
Carbon pricing is a sharp example of how this is already playing out. With the EU’s CBAM now in effect and the UK’s to follow, carbon is increasingly embedded in the cost of trade and production. This favours businesses that can produce cleanly, efficiently and verifiably at competitive cost.
Yet there is an overlooked opportunity: decarbonisation and competitiveness pull in the same direction. Producing more efficiently, using less material and energy, can lower both emissions and cost. Capturing this opportunity depends on two things moving together: predictable policy that lets businesses plan with confidence, and the capability within business to act on it – with the data and intelligence to understand where carbon, energy and cost sit across their supply chains and where to intervene.
During Climate Week NYC, CISL's Corporate Leaders Groups and Neutreeno will bring together senior business leaders and policymakers in a high-level, closed-door roundtable to discuss what business and government need to do now to compete in this changing global economy.
Drawing on new research on credible, scalable and actionable supply chain emissions measurement, we'll explore how predictable policy and better business intelligence can work together to inform real decisions on sourcing, production and investment – and turn cleaner, more efficient production into competitive advantage.
