17 March 2026 - The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is pleased to announce that Canopy has once again been recognised in the Financial Times and Statista 2026 ranking of Europe’s Leading Start Up Hubs. This is the third year in a row that Canopy has featured in the list.
Canopy is placed at number 88 in Europe and 10th among UK hubs, which positions it within the top half of all European hubs included in the ranking – just three years after opening the workspace and five years after launching accelerator programmes. Canopy is the only innovation hub in Cambridge selected this year, reflecting the strength and distinctiveness of the community CISL has built around sustainability-focussed innovation.
This announcement coincides with CISL’s five year anniversary of its innovation and venture support programmes, a milestone that will be celebrated later this month at the Cambridge Climate Innovation Summit. Over this period, CISL has supported more than 500 entrepreneurs and early stage ventures, using its position within the University of Cambridge to connect breakthrough ideas with the market, policy and investment conditions required for real world impact.
Canopy sits within one of the most active science and technology clusters in the world. It brings together founders, researchers, investors and corporate partners who are working on climate and sustainability solutions. The upcoming Innovation Impact Report highlights how CISL helps these innovators move from technical credibility to commercial relevance by combining insight into market transitions with direct access to decision makers and applied industry partnerships. Using this model, CISL has supported over 500 startups over the past 5 years, which now collectively employ over 5000 staff, have raised over £650m in funding rounds and have a collective valuation of more than £4.1bn.
Leadership reflections
James Cole, Chief Innovation Officer at CISL, said:
“Being recognised again by the Financial Times reflects the strength of our community and the growing market-relevance for sustainability focussed innovation that offer pathways to growth and resilience for companies and whole sectors of the economy. As the only Cambridge hub included in the ranking, Canopy plays an important role in linking new ideas and emerging technologies with people and organisations who can help them scale.”
Zoe Loughlin, Head of the Canopy Innovation Community, said:
“This result highlights the achievements of our founders, alumni and partners during the first five years of our innovation programmes. Canopy has become a trusted home for innovators who are shaping commercial solutions to some of the most significant market needs, and it is inspiring to see the community continue to grow.”
The Canopy community includes ventures that have secured major investment rounds, won global awards and partnered with leading organisations across multiple sectors.
CISL also collaborates with corporates, policymakers and investors to support the wider conditions that help climate solutions grow beyond early stage pilots, working with major international partners such as BSI, L’Oreal, the Crown Estate, Full Vision Capital and UNICEF Office of Innovation.
A full summary of these achievements will be published later this month in CISL’s Innovation Impact Report, launched during the Cambridge Climate Innovation Summit.
