About
Portia is an established leader and innovator in the sustainability field and has worked across various sectors, including financial services, mining, development, and transport. She is currently running Karmino a sustainability consulting organisation that partners with companies, non-profits and regulators to design sustainability strategies.
Before starting her own company, she held the Sustainability function at institutions including Old Mutual, Sanlam, Standard Bank, and the Industrial Development Corporation. Her focus has always been to transform sustainability from a compliance function into a value-generating strategic pillar embedded in finance, risk, and governance structures.
She is able to combine macro scientific, social and business approaches to projects. Her experience is in policy development and she is able to connect with stakeholders from varying backgrounds with the aim of problem solving and collaboration.
Portia holds a Master's degree in Sustainability Leadership from Cambridge University, where she conducted a research project on the financing of water infrastructure in informal settlements in South Africa. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainability Leadership from Cambridge University, and a Bachelor of Social Science degree in Geography and Environmental Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
