Julia Baroness Brown of Cambridge

Baroness Brown, DBE FREng FRS FMedSci FINAE, is an eminent British engineer.  A career in academia (Cambridge and Nottingham universities) and industry (Rolls-Royce plc) led to 10 years as Vice Chancellor of Aston University and she joined the House of Lords as a Crossbench Peer in 2016. From 2022-2025 she chaired the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee, and now sits on the Intelligence and Security Committee.

Her key interests are climate change, innovation and technology and science education. She was vice-chair of the Climate Change Committee from 2008 to 2021 and she now chairs the Adaptation Committee of the CCC; other current and recent appointments include; chair of Frontier IP; NED of Ørsted and of Ceres Power; chair of the Carbon Trust (2018-2025).  She chairs the Royal Society Education Committee and the Royal Academy of Engineering Green Futures Fellowships Steering Committee. She holds MA and PhD degrees from Cambridge University.

Previous Government advisory roles including leading the King Review on decarbonising transport in 2008, membership of the Hydrogen Advisory Council and Climate Advisor to the Jet Zero Council.  She was a member of the Airports Commission, the Browne Review on fees and university funding and the Nurse Review of the Research Excellence Framework.
