Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

An engineer by training with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science, Jon has over 26 years of professional experience in the field of sustainability research and engagement, 12 of which have been in the financial services sector. He has worked extensively across a range of global industrial sectors supporting organisations with strategic social, environmental and sustainability related issues.


Jon has undertaken work assignment in several African and European countries as well in China, Russia and the USA. Jon was involved in the drafting of South African Code for Responsible Investment and currently serves on the UN PRI global reporting and assessment committee. Jon has served as an advisor to the University of Cape Town Panel for Responsible Investment and contributed to the work of the South African National Advisory Body for Impact investing.

He has played an active role in the academic sector through regular teaching contributions at the University of Cape Town Business School, University of Stellenbosch & Rhodes University. For the period 2011 to 2021 Jon led the development and implementation of the Responsible Investment Program across Old Mutual’s global operations. This included the Asset Management and Ownership practices of Old Mutual’ s African, European & US operations. The work has involved building out the business case for Responsible Investment, leading change, ESG data acquisition and system integration, implementing bespoke approaches to ESG integration - across listed equity (various strategies), private equity, infrastructure and fixed income capabilities. Responsibilities also include recruitment, team management, media, monitoring and evaluation, reporting, budgeting, stakeholder management, client pitches, marketing and strategic inputs to the Old Mutual Group Shared Value program.

While at Old Mutual he directly managed a team that undertook  company & industry ESG research, analysis of green growth opportunities, proxy voting & company engagement, ESG quant research, client reporting and fund raising, thought leadership, product innovation, engagement on regulatory issues and support for industry initiatives.

He was instrumental to the development and growth of the Old Mutual ESG indexation capability to over $2bn in AUM and lead the development of the firms proprietary ESG data signal and the launch of the firms Listed Equity Stewardship Service. Jon currently leading the development and implementation of Reyl’s sustainability and impact program.
