About CISL

The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is a globally influential institute within the University of Cambridge working on a mission to develop leadership and solutions towards a sustainable economy.

Our work has never been more relevant as leaders in business, finance and government look to ‘build back better’ from the Covid-19 global pandemic.  In our eyes, this means an economic recovery which prioritises investment and innovation in solutions to climate change, the restoration of nature, whilst delivering inclusive, resilient societies.

CISL has a strong focus on the finance sector. Our Centre for Sustainable Finance team works with groups of leading firms in the global investment, banking and insurance industries (through the Investment Leaders Group (ILG), Banking Environment Initiative (BEI) and ClimateWise group respectively) to improve their resilience, impact measurement, risk management, and facilitate positive impact and digital transformation.

About the role

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to join the Centre for Sustainable Finance as a project manager supporting core, ongoing work funded by and co-created with the Investment Leaders Group (ILG). The ILG is a group of ambitious institutional investment firms convened by the Centre for Sustainable Finance to co-create actionable research insights, supported by academic expertise from the University, that address systemic barriers to progress sustainable investment.

The successful candidate will manage a portfolio of projects, including some events, ensuring all activities are managed to a consistent standard of excellence. These projects include how investors can progress the SDG of decent work, supporting effective measurement for sustainable investment impacts and an ongoing collaboration with KPMG to scale an existing CISL framework. Delivery partners may include ILG member organisations, CISL Fellows/Senior Associates and other external and academic experts. The ideal Project Manager will have experience in managing a range of client-facing projects, from planning and content creation through to administration and supporting business development. Project content may be informed via interview programmes, market analysis, desk-based research or other methods. They will have experience in budget planning and communications, including on digital platforms.

Applicants must be committed to the values that underpin CISL's work and will be expected to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

  • An understanding of sustainable investment themes, challenges and opportunities to drive change in the real economy.
  • Ability to delivery professional, compelling project outputs for investment sector stakeholders within budget and to the agreed timeframe.
  • Experience working closely with senior stakeholders including leaders in the investment sector and policy decision makers.
  • Ability to think strategically and anticipate developments to avoid and mitigate problems;
  • Research and analysis skills relating to specific sustainable finance challenges; the ability to clearly summarise and present findings.
  • An understanding of ESG data and moderate degree of data literacy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at any one time, maximising synergies between projects, reviewing progress against targets and adapting as projects evolve.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and co-ordinate work with others, often under time pressure.
  • Ability to build relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders;
  • High level of competence across Microsoft software packages.

The role will report into the Senior Programme Manager of the ILG, be supported by colleagues from Centre for Sustainable Finance, and have no line management responsibilities. We are growing the team and the post is available immediately.

This post is full-time and based in Cambridge, UK with a hybrid working approach.
