The HR Business Partner is the most senior HR representative within CISL and has responsibility for the overall function, from strategy to daily operations. The role holder owns the HR strategy and is a key enabler of CISL's overall business plan, growth and success.  The HR Business Partner works with stakeholders across the Institute, translating business requirements into effective HR practices and delivering people solutions aligned to business objectives.  The role entails advising on matters such as organisational design and development, and partnering with business seniors to deliver on near term as well as long term change. The role also incorporates oversight of HR Operations, ensuring day-to-day service provisions meet targeted levels and standards.

This is a very exciting time for CISL, which is an institution that has a pedigree stretching back more than 30 years.  CISL's growth over the last few years has been pronounced moving it from a small to a medium scale organisation, and further expansion is planned to occur.  This role is instrumental in how CISL realises its potential and impact around the world.

Applicants must be committed to the values that underpin CISL's work and will be expected to demonstrate a range of essential skills and experience:

  • Educated to degree level.
  • Potentially holds a CIPD qualification (Level 7) or equivalent experience.
  • Significant senior operational experience gained at business partner/senior manager level within a high volume, rapid, customer-centric environment, effectively both managing staff and service delivery in a complex role.
  • Experience of proactively advising managers on the full range of people matters (e.g. discipline, grievance, performance management, sickness absence, recruitment) to successful resolution.
  • Experience of working successfully in a unionised environment.
  • Experience of leading change, implementing and rolling out new initiatives.
  • Commercial awareness and business acumen - understanding of the external market company performance and business drivers.  Understanding of how the business operates and is articulate in business language.
  • Relationship/account management including negotiation, contracting, consultancy, facilitation, influencing, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to coach senior managers and handle difficult discussions.
  • Thinks and acts strategically and operationally.
  • Able to apply judgement, creativity and flexibility to generate new and innovative ideas and approaches to problem solving.
  • Able to influence and challenge others, including senior colleagues and stakeholders, to ensure that the right outcomes are achieved.
  • Able to build effective and collaborative working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to acquire rapidly) University of Cambridge policy and practice across all HR activities.
  • Knowledge of (or ability to require rapidly) employment law and best practice in regions in which CISL has subsidiary companies.
  • Honed interpersonal skills in rapport building, empathy, tact, diplomacy, persuasiveness, listening skills and facilitation skills.
  • Demonstrable personal and professional authority to generate confidence across the range of HR activities.
  • An ability to prioritise a heavy workload, multi-task and remain calm when working under pressure.
