Air Quality, Urban Mobility and Governance in Kampala: an urbanising African city context 10.00 - 11.30am, 4 May 2021

Globally, air pollution causes around 7 million premature deaths every year, according to the World Health Organisation. With such a significant death toll, there exists a need to explore the emergence of air pollution as a public health threat.

KampalaThe main sources of air pollution are associated with human activities such as the way we move (mobility), the fuels we burn, the industries we operate and the waste we produce etc. Urgent action is needed to tackle the challenge of air pollution. But what can we do to tackle the problem we are currently facing?

As we celebrate the Air Quality Awareness Week under the theme “Healthy Air – Important for Everyone!”, this Webinar will examine transport related air pollution using a scientific, societal, policy and technological lens. We will explore:

  • the emergence of air pollution as a public health threat
  • the promise and peril of new technologies
  • the existing/proposed public policies that directly impact transport related air pollution in Kampala.

Join our expert panel, convened by the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and University of Birmingham to explore Air Quality, urban mobility and governance in Kampala, Uganda.

We will hear from experts from Uganda:

  • Dr. Gabriel Okello, Air Quality and NCDs Fellow, CISL
  • Paul Green – Makerere AirQo
  • Ms Immaculate Nyamaizi – Ugandan Government Ministry of Works and Transport
  • Ms Jennifer Kutesakwe – National Environmental Management Authority)

and from the United Kingdom discussing their work on air pollution:

  • Professor Francis Pope
  • Dr. William Avis – University of Birmingham

A panel of stakeholders from academia, civil society, the public and private sector will reflect on and discuss these presentations.

The event will be chaired by Dr. Jake Reynolds – Executive Director, University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership.
