The Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellowship in Transforming the Pulp and Paper Industry, supported by Sappi

In the wake of the planned transition to net carbon-zero operation across all European industries by 2050, pulp and paper industry is facing an uncertain future. Changes in demand for various fibre products, evolving regulatory framework for wood biomass and great uncertainty over potential future new markets in polymers and consumer products, create a very large and complex decision space. This Fellowship will attempt to identify a path towards sustainable pulp and paper industry, focusing on potential of novel applications of wood fibre, and use of wood-based feedstocks in the chemicals and materials markets. This will be achieved through generation of scenarios, extending the system to neighbouring industries and use of new tools of systems analysis and optimisation.

 

About the project


The pulp and paper industry is facing an uncertain future. Changes in demand for various fibre products, evolving regulatory framework for wood biomass and uncertainty over potential future new markets in polymers and chemicals, create a large and complex decision space. This Fellowship will explore how the pulp and paper industry can find a feasible path towards sustainability, in particular through the development of novel applications of wood fibre and wood-based feedstocks in the manufacture of polymers and consumer products. This will be achieved by extending the system to neighbouring industries and using new tools of systems analysis and optimisation to generate lifecycle scenarios.

Dr Yaseneva is the Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellow in Transforming the Pulp and Paper Industry, supported by Sappi.

Polina joined CISL Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellowship Programme in October 2019 to work on pathways of sustainable industrial transformation within pulp and paper industry. The emphasis of her work will be on life cycle assessment (LCA) and tools development bridging chemistry, environmental analysis and process design. She obtained MSc degree in ecology from Novosibirsk State University (Russia) followed by PhD in Chemistry at Cardiff University. During her post-doctoral positions at Universities of Warwick and Cambridge she was involved in European projects SYNFLOW, MONOCAT and MEASURE as an expert on sustainability assessment and metrics for evaluation of new chemical technologies. She was also involved in The Cambridge Centre for Carbon Reduction in Chemical Technology (C4T) in Singapore working on valorisation of bio-waste into high-value molecules.

Biography:

Before joining CISL as Prince of Wales Global Sustainability Fellow Dr Yaseneva was a Research Fellow at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (Cambridge), and before that a Research Fellow at School of Engineering (Warwick). During her previous appointments, she developed a significant portfolio of life cycle assessment case studies, focusing on decision support for implementation of innovate technologies in the process industries.

Dr Yaseneva’s first degree is in Ecology, with a subsequent Masters is in Chemistry, both from Novosibirsk State University. She was awarded her PhD is in Chemistry from Cardiff University (supervisors Profs. M. Bowker and G. Hutchings).

Research interests

Polina’s research interests are in the area of industrial ecology, or more specifically, the development of circular pathways for use of molecules. The foundation for her work is her earlier experience of developing catalysts for clean energy solutions and more recently, her work on evaluation of environmental impacts of new technologies at different levels of technology-readiness. In her last project, Polina performed sustainability assessments of processes using process modelling, life cycle assessment tools and process optimisation. She has worked on challenges in applying life cycle assessment along supply chains in process industries. Her primary focus is on methods for sustainability assessment to support the development of sustainable economy.

Polina maintains an interest in catalysis and nanomaterials. She recently completed a project on developing a continuous flow synthesis method for manufacture of a class of materials knowns as layered double hydroxides, widely used in catalysis and other applications.

Examples of Polina’s projects include:

  • a generic decision support tool for developing greener processes, which combines economic and environmental performance criteria, which used as an example a hypothetical new process of production of iso-carveol from two potential bio-waste feedstocks (paper and food industries wastes),
  • environmental assessment of production of carbon nanotubes and their application in a water purification process, which was done as part of an EU project MONOCAT,
  • first detailed LCA study of an organometallic catalyst for a pharmaceutical continuous flow process, which was done within a large integrated EU project SYNFLOW,
  • collaboration with George Washington University on the continuous flow synthesis of layered double hydroxides.
