Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL)

16 March 2021 – CISL’s Founder Director, Dame Polly Courtice has been appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire to support Lord Lieutenant Mrs Julie Spence OBE.

Polly Courtice

Dame Polly Courtice DBE, LVO, was Founder Director of the University of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (1989–2021). She is now Emeritus Director and Senior Ambassador, CISL.

On the announcement Dame Polly said:

“I’m very pleased to have been invited to support our Lord Lieutenant in Cambridgeshire as a Deputy Lord Lieutenant. The County has a unique role to play in the UK’s, and indeed the world’s, economic, social and intellectual fortunes. In this role I hope I can help to support the county and the people living and working in it.’

The Lord-Lieutenant is Her Majesty The Queen’s representative in the County and plays a role fostering good relations and co-operation between all kinds of organisation in every part of the County.  The Lord-Lieutenant is assisted in her role by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant and a number of Deputy Lieutenants, who may represent HM The Queen on the Lord-Lieutenant’s behalf if she is unable to attend an event to which she has been invited, or a Royal Visit to the County.  Deputy Lieutenants are drawn from different walks of life and from different parts of the County.

In 2016 Polly was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to Sustainability Leadership. She will stand down as Director of CISL in April 2021 when Clare Shine will become the new Director.
