27 January 2021 – The Master’s in Sustainability Leadership achieved a record number of applications for the second year running in 2020. Now in its twelfth year, the part-time graduate course continues to attract global interest, with over 330 students having studied since its launch in 2010.

The deadline for applications for the 2021 Master’s is midday on 17 February. Scholarships and bursaries close earlier on 1 February 2021.

After a turbulent year, the need for solutions to global challenges feels more significant than ever as we seek to build the future we want. Building the leadership required to implement change and accelerate progress is key. The Master's in Sustainability Leadership aims to develop a community of leaders who have:

  • a wide awareness and deep understanding of the social, environmental, ethical and economic challenges and opportunities facing the world
  • the vision and ambition to drive business leadership to achieve real systems change
  • the knowledge, experience and ability to critically evaluate a range of strategic levers for change
  • the leadership capacity and confidence at a personal and organisational level to best use these levers to effect transformation

As interest in the Master's continues to grow we are in the process of introducing an alternative, flexible route to the Master's course, which begins with completing the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business. This should help us to accommodate the growing number of deserving candidates.

“Studying the Master’s gave me the knowledge and confidence to become more assertive in my approaches and progress my career. I have applied the skills developed on the course directly to my workplace and used my dissertation to structure employee engagement programmes differently and to better effect.”

Rebecca Donnellan, Group Sustainability Manager, CK Hutchison Holdings

This year, applicants for the 2021 MSt in Sustainability Leadership have the opportunity to apply for a new Sustainability Leadership Access Bursary. The fund is available thanks to the generosity of alumni and teaching colleagues who made contributions to support sustainability leaders of the future otherwise unable to fund their studies. CISL recognises the positive value of diversity and inclusivity and is committed to promoting equality of access, hence we particularly encourage applicants from ethnic minorities and disadvantaged backgrounds.

We’re proud of the many achievements of our students, including these recent successes by MSt alumni, and we are delighted that many have chosen to share their stories of impact.

January 2021: Abigail Herron, Global Head of Responsible Investment at Aviva Investors, received the award for the best Master’s thesis for her research into “antibiotic resistance as a frontier topic in responsible and sustainable investment” at the FIR-PRI Finance & Sustainability 2020 Awards

September 2020: Herman Bril, Director of Investments at a Global Pension Fund, co-edited a book entitled ‘Sustainable Investing; A Path to a New Horizon

June 2020: Katerina Fragos, Manager, Sustainability and Climate Change Consulting, PwC, was recognised by Green Biz as one of their 30 under 30 workers, who are making strides in their sustainability efforts.

Last year, the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic affected us all. At CISL, we were well equipped to deliver dynamic and engaging workshops remotely and adapted our programmes accordingly.

“Despite the scale of the challenge, there were reasons for confidence. We already delivered significant parts of each Master’s online… it was so encouraging to see such a great number of students who felt the quality of the learning experience exceeded their expectations.”

Dr Louise Drake, Fellow at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) and Course Director for the Master’s in Sustainability Leadership

"This was one of the most engaging online learning activities I have done. The speakers were wonderful, our moderators were fantastic and the team ensured everything went smoothly."

Monica Kwok, PwC, Hong Kong

At present, we expect to deliver the 2021 Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership as advertised.

The deadline to apply for the MSt is 17 February 2021.
