Nathalie Baxter, Project Architect at Faulkner Browns Architects and a student of the Master of Studies in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment (IDBE), has been named one of the RIBA Journal Rising Stars for 2017.
Nathalie was selected for recognising and addressing the issues of young architects and construction professionals. She is one of 10 ‘Rising Star’ practitioners selected for having ‘achieved beyond their own projects to bring value in many other ways to their practices, their clients and the wider communities they work with’.
Nathalie joined cohort 23 of the IDBE Master’s course in September 2017, and was a winner of the IDBE scholarship for outstanding academic ability.
The current IDBE cohort attended their first residential week in Cambridge in September 2017. Students explored the global challenges affecting the built environment such as climate change, population growth, urbanisation and well-being; then drilled down into how built environment professionals can effect change.
Alongside lectures and seminars, the week included a studio design task for a pedestrian footbridge over the River Cam which will serve the newly opened Cambridge North railway station. Four teams tackled the project, each producing a scale model of their concept.
The interdisciplinary nature of the built environment requires leaders from different disciplines to drive change by inspiring others to work together to develop projects that contribute to sustainable and inclusive societies. Through the part-time IDBE Master’s course we help to develop leaders who can: understand the key challenges facing the industry and society; use their communication and team working skills to enable positive collaboration; and utilise their design skills to help shape desirable, resilient and future-fit projects.
