17 September 2015 – Green Growth Summit IV: New Challenges & Opportunities for EU Low Carbon Leadership was held at the European Parliament.

The invitation-only Green Growth Summit included a series of panel discussions:

  • Paris and beyond: Shaping, Securing and Implementing a Robust Global Climate Deal
  • Delivering the 2030 Package: Driving low carbon ambition
  • A Low Carbon Energy Union: Delivering a cost-effective low carbon transition through new market designs, infrastructure and investments

The summit brought together Ministers, MEPs, policymakers, business leaders, investors and civil society to explore some of the new challenges and opportunities on the international and European low carbon agenda.  Of particular relevance in this summit was the international context, with scope for participants to reflect on what is needed to land the Paris deal, how to build on the momentum following the Paris Conference of the Parties (COP) and what role the EU, member state actors and non-state actors can play.

It took place at a critical point in the EU and UN negotiating and decision-making processes, one day before the EU Environment Council and in the run up to COP 21 in Paris. These factors made it a particularly timely opportunity to send a clear low carbon signal from Ministers, MEPs, businesses and investors. In recognition of the fact that the EU needs to provide clear leadership both before and after the Paris negotiations in order to build a low carbon economy, the summit also shone a spotlight on the EU domestic opportunities and challenges, including driving low carbon ambition, innovation and competitiveness through delivering the 2030 Climate and Energy Package and also through steps taken to build a robust low carbon Energy Union.
