The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has ambitious plans for growth over the next ten years. This role is key to the recruitment and retention of the staff that will be required to deliver that growth and has a critical part to play in the Institute’s overall organisational development.  The role holder provides a comprehensive Human Resources service to all staff, ensuring that the Institute complies with employment legislation and University policy and best practice.

You will be working to support CISL’s mission to empower individuals and organisations to take leadership to tackle critical global challenges in pursuit of a sustainable world, which we pursue through graduate and executive education, research, multi-stakeholder collaborations and work with companies to empower leaders for sustainability. As CISL’s in-house, frontline HR adviser you will need to be confident and professional in your approach, providing HR advice and support across a wide range of HR issues, with a strong focus on recruiting, developing and retaining high calibre staff and on employee relations.

You must be able to offer sound judgement underpinned by a thorough knowledge of employment law and good practice and will be expected to conceive pragmatic and creative solutions to problems as they arise, ensuring alignment with University policies and procedures, working closely with the University’s central University HR team. You will be directly responsible for developing HR policy, management systems and overseeing staff relations, taking account of local jurisdiction and market conditions.

Applicants must be sympathetic to the values that underpin CISL’s work and will be expected to demonstrate the following essential skills and experience:

  • First degree is essential or equivalent experience
  • Substantial track record of working in a role with HR responsibilities, including recruitment, employee relations, policy development, staff development and problem resolution
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of UK employment law
  • Experience of overseeing HR across international offices,  ideally with knowledge of employment law and best practices in regions in which CISL has subsidiary companies or staff (Australia, South Africa and Belgium), is desirable
  • Knowledge of (or ability to acquire rapidly) University of Cambridge best practice standards across the spectrum of HR activities
  • Demonstrable experience of dealing with complex and sensitive people issues with the ability to facilitate ‘difficult’ conversations
  • Ability to build relationships with all levels of staff within the Institute and the University as well as with external contacts such as employment and executive search agencies
  • Well-honed interpersonal skills: rapport building, empathy, tact, diplomacy, ability to influence, negotiation and listening skills
  • High-level communication ability, both oral and written with the ability to draft text that is succinct yet conveys the essential information in a logical sequence
  • Experience of line and team management
  • Experience of preparing and managing budgets
  • Ability to prioritise a heavy workload and multitask
