2 days a week for 6 months with potential to extend, remote with potential of working when required from CISL’s offices in Cambridge and/or Brussels.

The Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) is seeking a freelance or retained consultant to provide communications support for the Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group. The communications consultant will work directly with CISL’s policy team, working closely with CISL’s communications manager. The purpose of the role is to help raise the profile of the CLG and its members’ work in tackling climate change.

The Prince of Wales’s Corporate Leaders Group (CLG) brings together European business leaders to accelerate progress towards a low carbon, sustainable economy. Through exchange of ideas, experience, and a dialogue with policymakers, the CLG facilitates solutions that support a resilient and prosperous future. In light of the Paris Agreement, the EU has a full agenda of legislation to implement, and the opportunity to raise the ambition of its 2030 target. The global shift towards nationalism and populism, including the UK’s decision to leave the EU, and poses challenges for climate action. In this context the CLG is delivering a strategy that emphasises the collective experience and learning of its members, and the potential this has to help inform and improve policy and practice.

CLG communication aims:

  • Demonstrate that there is a willingness and ability in the business community to rise to the challenges and opportunities posed by climate change; and that there are companies (including the members of the CLG) that are already making changes to their business
  • Use companies’ collective experience and learning plus CLG research to advocate progressive policies and innovative solutions that help limit the scale and impact of climate change, while still allowing businesses and societies to prosper
  • Create and contribute to a conversation, whereby businesses, consumers, academics and policymakers are able to come together and share ideas from their particular perspectives, that contribute to the creation of a sustainable economy
  • Recruit more members to ensure the CLG represents a diverse range of companies from across Europe

Outline responsibilities/deliverables

We are commissioning regular communications support from 8 Jan 2018 to deliver a communication strategy over the year that helps to help raise the profile of the CLG and its members’ work in tackling climate change. This will involve a combination of reactive (40%) and proactive (60%) communications support including:

  • Assisting the CISL’s communications manager in managing a new CLG communication group, developing relationships with relevant comms teams and gathering insights from them on their contribution to key CLG outputs throughout the year
  • Generating media coverage in a broad range of European markets as well as in the UK.
  • Communication of CLG reports and policy briefs throughout the year to position the CLG’s leadership on key themes such as renewable energy, circular economy and industrial strategy
  • Communication of CLG’s participation in external events such as the International Conference on Climate Change and COP24
  • Advice on how to use other high profile voices to promote or respond to CLG messages, e.g. academics, (ex-) politicians or diplomats, and other business leaders or commentators
  • Developing relationships with key journalists, advising/facilitating briefings with the CLG Director on a regular basis
  • Scoping reactive media opportunities for CLG that are linked to national political agendas in Europe

Essential attributes/expertise

  • Senior level of communications expertise
  • Deep understanding the role of strategic communications in engaging the media and influencing policy discussions
  • Ability to work with others, particularly at a senior level
  • A strong network of media contacts
  • Ability to work with coalitions and partnerships  
  • Excellent news sense and understanding of the news agenda
  • Experience of coordinating media at high level events and conferences
  • Excellent writing skills

Desirable attributes/expertise

  • Knowledge/experience of EU policy
  • Understanding of the climate/energy/sustainability debate
